Jump in! Jumpstarting university faculty to develop online courses

Session Description
This general forum session will share Jumpstart, a program developed by the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Distance Course Design and Consulting Group (DCDC) to assist faculty with designing online courses and programs. Over the past 10 years, DCDC has been contracted by university departments and programs to assist with hundreds of online course development projects. In an effort to reduce departmental costs and openly share best practices, DCDC developed Jumpstart.

Jumpstart is an accelerated training and support program blending online and face-to-face elements for faculty designing online courses. The online portion of Jumpstart consists of development tools and an inspiration showcase located on the Jumpstart website (https://learn.coe.hawaii.edu/jumpstart). The tools are a set of open, custom-designed, development tools including an online course rubric, templates for blueprinting, modules, and syllabi. The inspiration showcase includes ideas for online activities and assignments including work samples, tool recommendations, screenshots, instructions, and faculty videos. The face-to-face portion of Jumpstart includes custom workshops culminating in a sharing of work accomplished. One-to-one assistance is offered throughout to address specific faculty development needs.

This session will share with participants the open tools and highlight examples from the inspiration showcase. Jumpstart has been conducted with 17 faculty members from 3 programs redesigning their face-to-face courses for online delivery. Lessons learned, evaluation results and practical implications for others designing online courses will be shared. Participants will be invited to participate in a discussion on online course development tools, favorite examples and relevant experiences.

OER Renewable Assignments for English 100 Online and Face-to-Face

Session Description
As part of the Designing with OER (DOER) Fellows program, Susan Wood, a Professor of English and Rachael Inake, an Instructional Designer, partnered to design three OER renewable assignments for English 100: Composition 1, which is the college’s introductory writing class. An OER renewable assignment is one where students create Open Educational Resources (OER) artifacts that are of value to the world. The three assignments included a: description essay topic activity, writing using sources activity, and writing using sources practice exercises. Renewable assignments support authentic learning and students’ work contributes to the OER movement. Students’ artifacts were licensed as CC BY and contributed as supplemental materials to the OER English 100 course sites.

Flipping the book on Biology: Developing an interactive, open, online textbook to flip a large, lecture-based university course

Session Description
The purpose of this general forum session will be to share a new, online, interactive, openly licensed Biology textbook. The textbook was designed and built through a partnership between the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Biology Department and the College of Education’s Distance Course Design and Consulting Group (DCDC). The textbook, originally released through Rice University’s OpenStax platform was customized in order to facilitate flipping the University of Hawaii’s introductory Biology course from a lecture-based, face-to-face class to a hybrid, active learning environment.

The session will focus on the new custom features of the textbook that allow students to interact with content and complete embedded, text and video-based H5P assessments within the textbook itself. Additional features to be highlighted include a new mobile-friendly theme, interactive practice activities, backend student data management, and the textbook’s multiple dashboards that provide analytics of aggregated data collected by the text for students and instructors to track progress in the book and course. The new online open text will be made freely available to students, replacing the expensive, hard copy text used in previous semesters.

Lessons learned from the textbook’s first semester rollout (Fall 2018) with 350 Biology students will be shared along with the initial results from a survey of these students regarding their experiences with the online textbook.

Session participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with flipped learning and open, online textbooks.

Going Open: A Textbook Replacement Design Case

Session Description
This paper reports the design case of a shift from a traditional textbook to OER. Reporting on the initial needs analysis through the formative evaluation of the beta version, this case documents the design and development decisions that were made. Findings show that students were more likely to engage with the OER than the traditional textbook. Lessons learned focus on the conceptualization of book and how to design with the 5 Rs of open in mind.
