Using Technology to Enhance Faculty/Student Connection in The Online Classroom: A catalyst to improving student success

Session Description
The proverb no man is an island by Donne (1624) is as relative to life today as it was in the 17th century, including the area of education. Connections have and continues to be an important part of education and student success. This is true of both online (Weller, 2007) and traditional classrooms (Kop, 2011). In general, people want connections with their peers, the content, and their faculty. This session will examine technologies which are available in many learning management systems and as open source with a focus on utilizing these technologies to enhance faculty/student/curriculum connection. We will operationally define connection and differentiate between time on task. Additionally, consideration will be given to the role connection can have in improving student success outcomes in the classroom. Lastly, areas for further research will be discussed.

Getting Your Students to Think Outside the Box

Session Description
Getting our students to think outside the box is not an easy task. Inside the box there is safety, familiarity, and less work. In this session I will be sharing with the participants my 20+ years of experience as a certified adventure trainer and college professor in using fun exercises both online and face-to-face in the learning process. I will share with you several activities that will increase student satisfaction, engagement, and retention. You’ll be participating in some of the shorter exercises during the class.

There will be a handout with directions for all the games included so that the participants can try them out and see how they work in getting their students to think outside the box.

How Flexible is Flexible Online Learning?

Session Description
Online learning is frequently promoted as a flexible approach to education, with learning described as happening “anywhere at anytime.” This suggests that online learning has the potential to be more accommodating, more accessible, and more equitable than face-to-face or blended alternatives.

In this presentation, I examine and problematize the claim that flexibility is widely beneficial. I do so by examining the literature and showing that flexibility is neither universal nor neutral. Who is and who isn’t able to take advantage of flexibility inherent in these courses? What restricts flexibility and how? What does it mean for learners to participate in flexible courses?

This presentation is aimed at learners, faculty, and administrators, and its goals are:

  1. To improve understanding of flexible learning to enhance online learning practices; and
  2. To demonstrate the value of critical perspectives in educational technology research.
